Craft Business Performance Review

Mid-Year Check-In: Assessing Your Craft Business Performance and Planning Ahead
Half the year has flown by—and now is the perfect time to pause and reflect. Whether your craft business has had a strong start or you’re feeling behind, a mid-year check-in gives you the clarity to finish the year strong. Many handmade sellers get caught up in the hustle of shows and online orders, but taking time to assess your progress can reveal what’s working, what isn’t, and where to focus next.
This guide will walk you through a simple, focused review of your craft business performance so you can reset your goals and boost your success in the second half of the year.
Review Your Sales and Financials
Start with the numbers. Look at your total revenue from the past six months, then break it down: Where did that income come from? Was it mostly in-person events, online sales, or wholesale orders? If you track by product, which items sold best? Which didn’t move at all? Understanding your sales trends helps you decide what to make more of—and what to phase out.
Don’t forget to look at expenses, too. Are there areas where you’re overspending or not seeing a return? Maybe you invested in a show that didn’t pay off, or your packaging costs crept up. Look for patterns and adjust your pricing, sourcing, or event choices accordingly.
Evaluate Customer Feedback and Engagement
Customer feedback is gold. Go through reviews, email replies, DMs, or even in-person conversations from your shows. What are people saying about your products, packaging, or booth experience? Are they repeatedly asking for a specific item, or loving a particular feature? These clues help shape future product development and marketing messages.
You should also take a quick audit of your social media and email engagement. Are people opening your emails? Are your posts getting likes, shares, or comments? If not, it might be time to tweak your messaging or visuals—or maybe you’re due for a break to reset your creativity.
Analyze Your Marketing Efforts
Which marketing channels are bringing in the most attention or conversions? Maybe one Instagram Reel brought in a ton of traffic, or your email list drove repeat purchases during a launch. Identify what worked—and repeat it. If you’ve been spreading yourself too thin on too many platforms, consider focusing on the one or two that bring the best ROI.
Check your website traffic, if applicable. Are visitors bouncing quickly, or staying and shopping? A few tweaks to your homepage, product descriptions, or photos could make a big difference in converting casual browsers into buyers.

Reset Goals for the Second Half of the Year
Based on what you’ve uncovered, it’s time to set focused, realistic goals. Maybe that’s increasing revenue by 20%, launching a holiday collection, or cutting unnecessary expenses. Pick 2–3 core goals and break them into smaller, actionable steps. This keeps you motivated and on track.
For example, if you want to grow your email list, commit to setting up a new lead magnet by July and promoting it at your next 3 shows. If you’re aiming to increase online sales, plan a mini-marketing campaign around your bestsellers in August. Be specific, and set dates.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring Data Because It Feels Overwhelming
You don’t need fancy tools or spreadsheets. Even a simple notebook or Google Doc with numbers and notes can give you insights. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s clarity.
Setting Too Many Goals at Once
Trying to overhaul everything at once leads to burnout. Focus on a few high-impact actions instead of 10 minor tasks that drain your energy.
A mid-year check-in isn’t just about numbers—it’s about giving yourself the power to course-correct. By looking honestly at your sales, customer feedback, and marketing efforts, you can adjust your strategy and finish the year with more focus and confidence. You’ve already done so much—now it’s time to build on that momentum.
