5 Costly Craft Show Mistakes (and How to Fix Them!)

Are you gearing up for a successful craft show season? Whether you’re a seasoned vendor or just starting out, avoiding common craft show mistakes can make all the difference in your sales, customer engagement, and overall experience.

Many craft show vendors unknowingly make errors that drive customers away, slow down sales, or limit repeat business. The good news? These mistakes are easy to fix with the right strategy!  I have made a few of these mistakes over the years and want to help you avoid making them.

In this post, we’ll cover five of the most common craft show mistakes and how to correct them—so you can boost your confidence and learn exactly how to sell more at craft shows for a profitable and stress-free craft fair experience.

Mistake #1: A Booth That Feels Unwelcoming

Why It’s a Problem:

Your booth is your storefront, and customers make a split-second decision about whether to stop or keep walking. If your booth looks cluttered, dark, or difficult to browse, you could be losing potential buyers before they even take a closer look.

Want to know how to sell more at craft shows?

It starts with your booth design. A warm, well-lit, and visually appealing booth invites customers in—and keeps them browsing longer.

Signs You’re Making This Mistake:

  • Your display is too crowded, making it hard to navigate.
  • There’s no clear flow for customers to walk through.
  • The lighting is dull, and your products don’t stand out.
How to Fix It:

✔️ Keep your setup open and inviting—avoid blocking entry points with tables or large displays. Customers like to see an entry and exit path.
✔️ Use strategic lighting—clip-on lights or LED string lights can make your booth more attractive. I use my lights even on a bright sunny day!
✔️ Declutter your display—use tiered stands and risers to create levels, making it easier for customers to see everything without feeling overwhelmed. Take advantage of the vertical space in your booth!

Mistake #2: Poor Customer Engagement

Why It’s a Problem:

If you’re too passive, customers may browse and leave without interaction. But if you’re too pushy, you risk scaring them away. Striking the right balance is key to making sales!

One of the best-kept secrets on how to sell more at craft shows is simple: talk to people! Your smile, your energy, and how you engage can turn a quick look into a sale.

Signs You’re Making This Mistake:

  • You greet customers with “Let me know if you have any questions” and then go silent.
  • You sit behind your table on your phone instead of engaging with shoppers.
  • You start explaining your products before the customer has even shown interest.
How to Fix It:

✔️ Use friendly, open-ended questions instead of generic greetings.

  • Example: “I just finished making this one—what do you think?”
✔️ Be present and approachable—stand near your display, smile, and make eye contact.
✔️ Let the customer browse first, then step in at the right moment to offer insights.
  • Remember, it’s more about building a relationship first, then the sales will follow.

Mistake #3: Hard-to-Find Pricing (or No Pricing at All!)

Why It’s a Problem:

Customers don’t always ask for prices—if they can’t find them, they may assume your products are too expensive or feel awkward asking.

Clear pricing is a must if you’re learning how to sell more at craft shows. Don’t leave buyers guessing—it can cost you sales!

Signs You’re Making This Mistake:

  • You rely on verbal pricing instead of clear signs or tags.
  • Your pricing signs are inconsistent or difficult to read.
  • You have multiple similar items with different prices, confusing customers.
How to Fix It:

✔️ Label everything clearly—use professional, easy-to-read price tags or signs.
✔️ Use uniform pricing signage to keep things consistent.
✔️ Create a simple price list for grouped products (e.g., “All bows $15, All wreaths $65”).

Mistake #4: Missing Opportunities for Repeat Sales

Why It’s a Problem:

Many vendors focus only on the sale in front of them, missing out on long-term customers who could bring repeat business and referrals.

If you’re serious about how to sell more at craft shows: think beyond the booth. Create a system to collect emails, share social media links, and offer incentives for future purchases.

Signs You’re Making This Mistake:

  • You don’t have a system for collecting customer emails or social media follows.
  • You don’t encourage customers to find you online.
  • You don’t offer incentives for future purchases.
How to Fix It:

✔️ Set up a QR code or sign-up sheet for an email list (“Join my VIP list for exclusive deals!”).
✔️ Encourage social media engagement (“Tag us on Instagram for a special discount!”).
✔️ Hand out business cards or flyers with your Etsy shop, website, or upcoming events.
✔️ Offer a loyalty incentive (Buy 3 wreaths, get 10% off your next order!).

Mistake #5: Being Unprepared for Checkout

Why It’s a Problem:

A slow or confusing checkout process can frustrate customers and lead to lost sales.

When looking at how to sell more at craft shows: one thing vendors overlook is how much a smooth, fast checkout experience matters. From payment options to packaging, be ready to close the sale with ease.

Signs You’re Making This Mistake:

  • You only accept cash, limiting your potential sales.
  • Your card reader is unreliable or slow.
  • You don’t have bags or packaging ready for customers.
How to Fix It:

✔️ Offer multiple payment options—accept Square, Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App.
✔️ Have a backup system (hotspot or offline transactions) in case of Wi-Fi issues.
✔️ Keep a well-organized cash box with plenty of change.
✔️ Have bags and tissue paper ready for packaging purchases.

Avoiding these five common mistakes can dramatically improve your craft show success. By making small tweaks to your booth setup, customer engagement, pricing strategy, marketing, and checkout process, you’ll increase sales and create a more enjoyable shopping experience for customers.
